Our first year is in the books and we couldn’t be happier.
The inaugural Maple City Grand Prix, held May 31 – June 2, and sanctioned by US F1 Prop, was a huge hit both with racers and fans, and looks to continue serving as a top venue for years to come..
We want to congratulate Terry Rinker and Team Amsoil, and Mark Schmerbauch, for taking the checkers in F1 and F-Lights, respectively, and we want to thank all the teams for a weekend of great racing, fun parties and wonderful interaction with the fans.
We also want to congratulate Tim Seebold, who brought his NGK Sparkplugs boat home in second place and F1 rookie Carlos Mendana who, with his third place finish in LaPorte, brought home his first ever F1 podium finish.
Local favorite Steve Merleau, who hails from nearby Fennville, Michigan, finished second in F-Lights ahead of Texan Chris Hughes.
Stone Lake’s inaugural race was a hit with teams and fans, despite a stretch of unseasonably chilly and windy weather.
“This has the potential to be one of the top races on the circuit,” Lynn Simburger, driver of the number 72 PlayCraft F1 boat said. “The lake is a great facility and the welcome we got was great.”
The full field of 15 F1 boats and 13 F-Lights boats excited the thousands who lined Stone Lake Beach and Lakeshore Drive for three full days of racing, as well as the great crowds that ventured downtown LaPorte Saturday night for the boat parade and block party.
US F1 Powerboat Tour President Jose Mendana Jr is working with race organizers to set the wheels in motion to bring the tour back to Stone Lake in 2014.
“We were really happy with LaPorte and Stone Lake and we can’t wait to come back next year,” Mendana said. “This was a great first-time event and it will be even bigger and better next year.”
